Associate Guides;

Our associate guides are all highly skilled and qualified. We call on them when we are busy or feel that our groups will benefit from their particular areas of expertise whether that be marine biology, geology, kayak fishing or other areas of paddle sport.

Howard Jeffs has been sea kayaking for nearly 40 years, and in 1983 became the youngest BCU Level 5 Sea Coach of the time. The following year he achieved the same position with the Mountaineering Instructors Certificate. Although very fortunate to have worked and paddled in most of Europe, Arctic Norway, Svalbard and Greenland, North America, Sri Lanka, Maldives and the Galapagos Islands, his love for the diverse west coast of Britain still remains ever strong. His particular passion is the west coast of Scotland and her mountains in the winter. As well as an author, involved in sea kayak design and manufacturing, he is also an enthusiastic yachtsman.

Sea Kayak Guides, Pembrokeshire, West Wales. about us.Jon Haylock has had a love for the outdoors from a very young age which grew into an unhealthy obsession for climbing and mountaineering, before seeing the light and taking up kayaking. Despite first learning to kayak on the gnarly waters of the River Thames he was not put off and now has been coaching and playing in kayaks for over 10 years.

He is a BCU Level 4 Sea and Inland Coach. Jon has been fortunate enough to have coached and paddled in a number of the prime paddling locations around the UK from guiding sea kayak expeditions in the Outer Hebrides to kayaking from lands end to the Scilly Isles and of course beautiful West Wales.

Paddling has also taken him further afield across Europe, Morocco, Corsica, Costa Rica, Mexico and Patagonia.

He has also been privileged to surf kayak for Wales. Jon has finally after years of being an adventuring nomad, chosen to make Pembrokeshire his home where his passion for all things paddling will educate and entertain you, ensuring that you will become equally hooked.

Tom Luddington has lived in Pembrokeshire for 10 years, and has spent many happy days out adventuring and exploring the best tide races, caves and beaches of the coastline and offshore islands of Pembrokeshire by sea kayak. Tom knows Pembrokeshire really well, and loves to share his passion for the abundant wildlife and spectacular coastline with everyone. Tom is a level three coach, and holds the 5 Star Sea Kayak leadership award.

Tom has paddled extensively in the UK with trips out to Lundy Island and Pabbay and Mingulay in the Outer Hebrides being the best of the bunch, and he can sometimes be seen abandoning his kayak and taking to the rock when he spies a irresistible new potential rock climb above deep water.

Tom is also a keen surfer, a member of the St David’s coastguard team, and helps to run the Pembrokeshire Outdoor Charter project which organises environmental training events for outdoor instructors. As a result he has attended over 30 environmental training events himself! Needless to say he has picked up quite a few interesting ‘funky facts’ about Pembrokeshire’s wildlife which he is always happy to share – his favourite story is about barnacles, you’ll have to ask him to tell you that one...

Tom says that a perfect day out paddling for him is “Here in Pembrokeshire, out to one of the offshore Islands, to see the puffins, porpoise and seals and play in the tide races,- with a spicy surf landing on a deserted sandy beach to finish!”

Dr Lou Luddington is a Marine Biologist whose passion in life is the natural world. Lou is an accomplished sea kayaker and is available as a guide through Sea Kayak Guides to provide expertise on wildlife in Pembrokeshire.Lou has been delivering bespoke environmental training for kayaking and coasteering instructors on all aspects of wildlife in Pembrokeshire for 10 years.

Lou has extensive experience in field and diving surveys in the UK and the tropics. She has worked in marine conservation for the last 10 years and worked as marine conservation officer at Skomer Marine Nature Reserve for 3 years. Lou now runs her own business, Luddington Marine which provides a range of services including diving surveys, marine biology workshops, environmental training for outdoor centres and wildlife guiding. Lou’s all-time best wildlife encounter was sea kayaking with two Minke whales and a basking shark on the same day.
Pembrokeshire is world class for sea kayaking, with Skomer Island and the Bishops and Clerks on the doorstep there is so much wildlife to enjoy all year round – getting out in a kayak amongst the wildlife is what life’s all about for me!
 Lou is also a super-keen surfer and loves snorkelling.
