Nige's blog

Sorry for the delay in writing this we have all been a little busy and Nige just got back from a trip.

We have just spent an excellent weekend on Skomer with a group, great paddling and scenery.Stayed up to watch the shearwaters unfortunately they didn't land until 3 in the morning as there was a very bright moon. However the group was mesmerised by the number variety and sizes of the toads and frogs that came out in the evening.

Firstly and most importantly Martin and Denise have a new baby boy a healthy 9lb 10 oz.

Secondly we have a new member of the team Tom Luddington, check out the about us page for a full bio.

The Stackpole Festival was a great success with over 75 paddlers and 15 coaches attending, if you were one of those 75 we hope you enjoyed it, if you weren’t then maybe we’ll see you in 2 years time.

In the meantime we are continuing with courses and guided trips and enjoying the great weather; come and join us!

Team PEAK UK at The Stackpole Festival

It was good to host a group from Finland last week. During a lull in the strong Northerlies we managed to get out to the Bitches which even on Neaps were producing some great conditions. I am sure all enjoyed themselves thanks to Roope Roine for organising the visit.

We have had to make the difficult decision to postpone the event due to unfavourable weather. This month has been plagued by strong Northerly winds which are due to continue over the weekend. Our aim has always been to run a fun, positive and safe event for all involved and we feel that with the current forcast this will not be possible.

We will be contacting those who have sent booking forms, payments made will be reimbursed in full. We will announce the alternative date soon.

Several months ago Bath Canoe Club booked a "rough water handling" course for 17th, 18th April. The weekend came around with warm sunny weather, very light winds and the smoothest seas of the year! Saturday's circumnavigation of Ramsey Island was one of the flattest John and Martin could remember, this allowed some incredible cave exploration and wildlife watching. After a long relaxed lunch on the island (with 2 of the group having an unplanned siesta), The Bithes provided everyone with plenty of rough water. The day finished at sunset on Whitesands Beach, followed by dinner in the pub.

Early March saw Martin out paddling in perfect conditions with old friend and legendary paddler (Hairy) Dave Aires and his friends Gareth and Chris. On the first day they paddled around Ramsey Island; accompanied by lots of seals, Razorbills, Guillemots, and other sea birds. After lunch at Ramsey harbour there was time for a quick play at The Bitches tidal race before paddling into Whitesands bay to finish the day with a surf.

We will be exhibiting at the Welsh Canoe and Kayak show this year.  The show takes place on Saturday 24th April at the Cardiff Marine Village, near the new Cardiff International White Water Course.  It is free to get in, so why not pop in for a chat and a welsh cake.  Check out the website www.welsh-canoe-kayak-show.co.uk.

As you'll see from the pictures below, Bath Canoe Club had perfect weather for their first visit of the year; blue skies, sunshine (and cold Easterly winds). While one group went out in search of rough water, the rest of us explored the more sheltered waters of the North Pembrokeshire Peninsular, enjoying the scenery and wildlife.

Wildlife spotted included: An otter, several Peregrine Falcons, Sparrowhawk, various sea birds and some inquisitive seals. As usual by the time the cameras came out they had disappeared! So you'll have to make do with pictures of paddlers instead.

Last weekend we hosted Bath Canoe Club, they joined us for some tailor made coaching. Half the group were coached in moving water, horizontally and vertically. The other half improved on their general sea kayaking.

Jon and Nige have been getting out for a test ride of another new toy.  Thanks to Nathan Eades kindly leaving his prototype surf kayak the Alushe by Airtime kayaks with us.  It has put a big smile on their faces whilst putting it through its paces, with an incredible turn of speed and looseness, this boat really flies. I thinks a few orders may be on their way soon!!
